Ryan Stancill: Commitment and Craft
When seasoned architect Ryan Stancill set out to mark his 50th birthday, he knew he wanted something personal, permanent, and artfully designed. He turned to Russ Abbott, owner of Ink & Dagger, to begin work on a full leg sleeve that would reflect both his love of intricate design and his respect for master craftsmanship. The result? A jaw-dropping fusion of ornamental scrollwork and Japanese Kumiko patterns—tattooed from hip to ankle.
Fast forward a few years, and Ryan and Russ have just wrapped up his second full leg sleeve, a mirror of the first in its ambition and artistry. This achievement makes Ryan the perfect pick for Ink & Dagger’s first-ever Client of the Month—a title well-earned through trust, vision, and long-term collaboration.
When Design and Tattooing Align
From the start, Ryan’s project was anything but typical. His background in architecture made him particularly drawn to Russ’s ornamental style and the way he weaves inspiration from various cultural design traditions. This sleeve would mark Russ’s first use of Kumiko patterns in tattooing—an intricate Japanese woodworking style that relies on symmetry, precision, and balance.
Blending these patterns with Russ’s signature scrollwork demanded a thoughtful approach to flow and placement. The result is a fully wrapped leg sleeve where every angle offers something new to admire.
With the completion of the second leg, Ryan now wears a matched set—each leg telling a story in texture, pattern, and precision.
Ryan’s Advice: Go Big, But Go Smart
For those considering a large-scale tattoo project, Ryan offers hard-earned wisdom from someone who’s been there—twice:
“Getting a large-scale tattoo, especially one that wraps entirely around your leg, is a big undertaking. It’s not just about finding an artist whose work you love—you really need to understand their ability to translate their art to your body. Not always as easy as it may sound.”
He stresses the importance of open communication and asking questions, especially for clients who are new to large pieces.
“I had gotten a lot of smaller tattoos over the years before I decided on this large piece. I know for me there was initially a little anxiety from the unknown. Russ was quick to talk through the design, stenciling, how the tattooing would flow, and the entire process. Trust is key.”
Client of the Month, But a Collaborator for Years
Working with Russ on not one, but two full sleeves, Ryan exemplifies the kind of partnership that allows truly custom work to shine. His commitment to the process—and trust in his artist—allowed something remarkable to unfold.
Whether you’re dreaming up your first big piece or already planning your next, Ryan’s journey is proof that when you combine vision with the right artist, the results are nothing short of iconic.
