Tattoo Aftercare Spotlight: The Magic of Tattoo Film

Recently, Tattoo Film has become a game-changer in tattoo aftercare. We've tried various brands and learned a lot about its best uses and which tattoos it's most suited for. Our friend and renowned tattoo artist, Myke Chambers, teamed up with Sorry Mom to produce their version of Tattoo Film. We stock it at Ink & Dagger, so you can grab a roll during your tattoo session and see for yourself. But always remember: your artist knows best about whether Tattoo Film is right for your tattoo's healing.

What is Tattoo Film?

Tattoo Film, like the one from Sorry Mom's product range, is a thin, transparent adhesive film designed to offer a new tattoo optimal conditions for healing. Born from the medical world, the original inspiration, Tagaderm, was used in hospitals and clinics to keep wounds clean and to promote faster, safer healing.

How is Tattoo Film Applied?

  1. Clean Start: First, the fresh tattoo must be cleaned thoroughly with a gentle antiseptic solution.

  2. Placement: The film is then placed over the tattoo. It's adhesive, so it sticks to the skin, sealing the tattoo off from external threats like dirt, bacteria, and other contaminants.

  3. Smooth Out: Air bubbles should be pushed out, and the film should lie as smoothly as possible against the skin.

Recommended Length of Time:

Typically, the tattoo film is recommended to be worn for up to 24 hours for the first application. Depending on how much the tattoo weeps (i.e., releases excess ink and plasma), it might need to be changed sooner. After removing the first sheet, the tattoo should be cleaned, and a second sheet can be applied for 3-5 days.

Benefits for Active Lifestyles:

For those constantly on the move, or those engaging in activities where the tattoo might come in contact with dirt or sweat, the tattoo film is a lifesaver. It acts as a barrier, protecting the fresh tattoo from external elements, and allows the skin beneath to heal. It's especially handy for small to medium-sized tattoos which might be exposed during workouts or other activities.

Potential Concerns with Tattoo Film:

  • Skin Reactions: Some people might have sensitivities or allergies to the adhesive used in the film. If any itchiness, redness, or unusual discomfort occurs, remove the film and wash the area.

  • Fluid Build-up: It's normal to have a bit of fluid or ink collect beneath the film. However, if there's excessive fluid build-up, it might be necessary to change the film more frequently.

  • Other Complications: Ensure the skin around the tattoo is entirely dry before applying the film to avoid trapping moisture, which can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

The Science Behind Tattoo Film:

Tattoo Film creates a moist healing environment, which accelerates cell regeneration and promotes faster tattoo healing. It acts almost like a second skin, allowing the skin to breathe while protecting it from contaminants. The idea comes from moist wound healing principles in the medical field, where keeping wounds moist (but not wet) has been shown to promote faster, more effective healing with reduced scarring.

Applying Tattoo Film at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide:

If you've chosen to go the route of tattoo film for your aftercare, applying it correctly is crucial. While your tattoo artist might apply the initial film, you may need to replace it during the healing process. Here's how to get the job done right at home:

  1. Wash Your Hands: Before you touch your tattoo or the film, ensure your hands are clean. Use soap and warm water, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds.

  2. Measure & Cut: Take a piece of tattoo film from the roll. It should exceed the size of your tattoo by about 2" in all directions. This gives you a comfortable margin to work with.

  3. Prep the Skin: Any body hair in the vicinity of the tattoo should be shaved. This ensures the film adheres properly and doesn't get caught in any hair.

  4. Clean the Tattoo: Use mild soap and water to wash the tattoo gently. Thoroughly rinse away any soap residues, as these can irritate the tattoo. Pat the area dry gently with a clean towel, then allow it to air dry completely.

  5. Smooth the Edges: Trimming sharp corners from the film can prevent it from lifting off prematurely. Rounded edges adhere better to the skin.

  6. Peel & Apply: Start by removing the backing from the film. Begin the application by pressing the film to the center of the tattoo first. Then, working from the center outward, apply pressure to avoid trapping air bubbles.

  7. Seal the Perimeter: Make sure the film is adhered securely to the un-tattooed skin surrounding the tattoo, maintaining at least a 2" overlap. This creates a protective seal.

  8. Finish Touch: There's an extra backing layer on top of the film. Gently peel this away, revealing the thin final layer of the Tattoo Film.

  9. Monitor Your Skin: Once the film is applied, be vigilant. If you notice any signs of irritation or excessive redness, consult with your tattoo artist.

  10. Patience is Key: Ideally, the film should remain undisturbed until around day five post-tattooing. This allows the tattoo ample healing time beneath its protective layer.

  11. Gentle Removal: When it's time to remove the film, be gentle. Start at the edges, and peel it back slowly. Rushing can irritate your tattoo. If the film resists or feels overly sticky, moisten the adhesive edge with a wet cloth, which should help it release more easily.

Final Thoughts:

Applying tattoo film at home can seem daunting, but with the right steps and precautions, it can be straightforward. Remember, the goal is to protect your new ink while it heals. Any concerns or issues should be discussed with your tattoo artist. Proper aftercare ensures your tattoo looks vibrant and remains an artwork you're proud to showcase.
