Liam Connolly: Classic Ink, Modern Collector
Trust the Process
For some collectors, every tattoo is planned years in advance. For others, the best pieces come from trusting the process and allowing the artwork to evolve naturally over time.
For June's Client of the Month, Liam Connolly, that's exactly what has happened.
While his traditional leg sleeve wasn't mapped out from day one, it has grown organically with every appointment, each new tattoo filling another space and adding another chapter to the story. Along the way, Liam has discovered that some of his favorite pieces weren't necessarily his original idea, but instead they were the result of putting his trust in his artist and embracing the collaborative process.
And that's exactly what keeps bringing him back to Ink & Dagger.
Finding the Right Artist
Liam's appreciation for tattoos started long before he ever got one himself.
"I always had an interest in tattoos and artwork and knew I wanted them when I got older," he said. "Convincing my parents was the hard part."
His first tattoo experience at Ink & Dagger was a positive one, but it wasn't until a chance walk-in attempt last summer that he found the artist who would shape the majority of his collection.
"I had some free time and went to see if anyone had time for a walk-in. Michel didn't have time that day, but we had a quick consultation and he told me he could make my ideas happen."
That brief conversation was enough to convince Liam he'd found the right fit.
"His creativity was perfect, he's very personable, and we talk every tattoo session."
Letting the Artist Lead
One of the defining characteristics of Liam's collection is just how much creative freedom he gives Michel.
Rather than arriving with rigid expectations, he brings ideas and trusts the process.
"With my leg it's been very organic. I come to Michel with tattoo ideas and give him free reign. I think I've only ever tweaked one thing. I respect his art and love what he comes up with."
That trust has paid off again and again.
"I think they all have been better than I imagined."
One piece in particular completely changed his perspective.
"The moth on the inside of my thigh completely changed my perspective because he was able to place it perfectly in this huge gap, which was amazing."
It's a reminder that experienced tattoo artists don't just create great artwork, but that they also understand composition, flow, and how every piece contributes to the larger collection.
Bold, Timeless, Traditional
Liam's attraction to American traditional tattoos comes down to one simple reason: they've always stood out to him.
"It was just something I saw years ago on older people and was really drawn to the old school feel of big and bold."
Finding an artist who specializes in that style made the decision even easier.
"Michel can just replicate everything I want perfectly."
As his leg continues to fill up, classic traditional imagery has become a recurring theme.
"The standard dagger and birds are fun. I'm also very into animals, so having the eagles, birds, and snakes is cool to build onto it."
Among all of his tattoos, one still stands above the rest.
"I think my knee is my favorite. It's a rose with a snake wrapping around my leg going up to my quad."
His stacked swallow shin tattoo is quickly becoming another standout, earning compliments almost everywhere he goes.
More than just a Tattoo
While the artwork itself is important, Liam says the experience at Ink & Dagger has become just as meaningful.
"The camaraderie of the shop and the front of the house is a fun atmosphere. I'm talking to artists, clients, staff, and it's a fun atmosphere to hang out in and relax into."
That welcoming environment came at exactly the right time.
Looking back, Liam says getting tattooed during a particularly chaotic period of life gave him something positive to focus on and helped take his mind off everything else going on around him.
The memories attached to each tattoo have become just as significant as the artwork itself.
"My style has changed over the years. Looking back, I'll remember where I was at that point in my life."
Learning to Trust
If there's one lesson Liam has taken from collecting tattoos, it's learning to trust the people who do this every day.
When asked what advice he'd give someone starting a traditional tattoo collection, his answer was immediate.
"Do your research and find an artist who specializes in that style. The biggest thing is you have to trust your artist."
He admits he wishes he'd done even more research when he was younger.
"They're the experts, so if they're telling you something won't work, you have to trust them."
For Liam, that trust has turned ideas into tattoos that exceeded his expectations every single time.
The Journey Continues
Despite how much progress his leg has made, Liam isn't slowing down anytime soon.
Next on the list is a traditional gypsy lady head that will sit along the side of his quad, fitting seamlessly into the rest of the collection.
And every appointment only makes him more excited for what's ahead.
"Every time we do a piece, my leg feels more empty because I'm noticing gaps. I'm excited to see how it's all going to look when it's all said and done."
Before wrapping up, Liam wanted to make sure one thing was clear.
"I want to thank Michel for his creativity and the camaraderie of the shop."
From a spontaneous consultation to an ever-growing traditional leg sleeve, his tattoo journey has become proof that sometimes the best collections aren't meticulously planned, but built one trusted collaboration at a time.
