Chad Barker: A Story That Evolves
From one Tattoo to a Full Sleeve
Some tattoo projects start with a full vision. Others grow naturally over time, piece by piece, until one tattoo turns into something much bigger. For May’s Client of the Month, Chad Barker’s sleeve became exactly that—a deeply personal collaboration between him and Izzy that transformed from a single tribute tattoo into a full sleeve built around strength, protection, growth, and meaning.
What originally began as a dragon tattoo alongside the Roman numerals marking the day Chad met his wife quickly evolved into a larger project after his experience working with Izzy.
“I loved working on those with Izzy so much that I wanted to make it all cohesive,” Chad explained.
A Tribute Built around Meaning
The dragon itself was created as a tribute to his wife, inspired by her love for dragons and intended as a permanent gift dedicated to her. But as the sleeve expanded, so did the symbolism behind it.
Building the Sleeve Together
While many large-scale projects are artist-led from the beginning, Chad describes this sleeve as a true collaboration. The two spent time bouncing ideas back and forth, combining Chad’s concepts and reference images with Izzy’s artistic interpretation and composition skills.
“I had a bunch of ideas and me and Izzy were just going back and forth, bouncing off each other,” Chad said. “Izzy took my AI references and thirty minutes later he came back with the exact same design that's now on my arm. He took my random thoughts and reference images and put it all together.”
That collaborative process became one of the defining aspects of the project itself. Instead of simply collecting separate tattoos, the sleeve became a single visual story tied together through symbolism and personal transformation.
The Heart of the Sleeve
For Chad, one of the most meaningful parts of the sleeve is still the section dedicated to his wife.
“When I showed her, she was completely shocked,” he said. “She told me I’d never be able to top that gift.”
Transformation through Tattooing
But beyond the tribute itself, the sleeve also reflects Chad’s own personal growth and perspective on life.
“In the top part of the sleeve, I feel like that warrior battling the dragon is me getting my life together,” he explained. “As opposed to the dragon I got for my wife, I am the dragon protecting her heart. It shows that I’ve been through a transformation.”
That sense of transformation is something Chad says he carries with him every day now.
“Yeah, it’s changed how I see myself,” he said. “It makes me feel like I have that dragon strength inside me. It reminds me that I’ve overcome worse and that I have the strength and ability to take what life gives me.”
More than just Artwork
One of the things that stands out most about Chad’s sleeve is how intentional every piece feels. While the project is visually bold and cohesive, the emotional meaning behind it remains just as important as the artwork itself—a balance that often defines the strongest large-scale tattoo projects.
And according to Chad, the experience has completely changed how he views tattoos moving forward.
“Now I definitely want to do my other arm,” he laughed. “I just want to give Izzy my arm and let him do whatever he wants. But I also want it to be meaningful, so I’m just waiting for inspiration to strike.”
Trusting the Process
He also credits much of that trust to Izzy’s communication and creative process throughout the project.
“Izzy is just the most communicative and creative person.”
Of course, no sleeve journey comes without a little pain.
“There were definitely a couple spots I was hoping to spend less time on,” Chad joked. “But we just powered through.”
Even so, he says the process was far easier than he expected.
“I don’t know what Izzy’s technique is, but to me he was way less painful than anything else I have.”
Advice for Considering a Full Sleeve
For anyone considering committing to a full sleeve, Chad emphasizes patience and choosing the right artist above everything else.
“Make sure you pick the right artist,” he said. “It’s incredibly visible forever, so their work quality has to be spot on. Be prepared for the long haul because you have to be patient. It doesn’t happen overnight. For quality work, you want someone who’s going to take their time.”
As the interview wrapped up, Chad had one final thing to add:
“Izzy is the best and I highly recommend him for a quality tattoo. Izzy is the man and you won’t be disappointed.”
A story that Continues to Evolve
Projects like Chad’s sleeve are a reminder that tattoos often become much more than artwork alone. They can represent relationships, milestones, growth, resilience, and identity all at once. Through collaboration, trust, and shared vision, Chad and Izzy created a sleeve that tells a deeply personal story—one that will continue evolving for years to come.
